Old Fortress

Old Fortress

Old Fortress is a place to visit when in Corfu. An old Venetian castle located just off Corfu old town on a peninsular. The old fortress is close to the Liston area of Corfu, and we arrived by blue bus from Kanoni on the No.2. There is a new fortress also in Corfu but we didn’t visit this. When you are approaching from the sea you see the old fortress. I had seen lots of pictures on the internet of the water ways and boats around the fortress and wanted to visit, if only to take some nice photos.

There was a 6 euro entrance fee each. There were workshops and museums inside but we just concentrated on walking around and taking photos. We were only strolling because of the heat.

There were spectacular views from wherever we were in the old fotress. It was very hot on the day we went so we only planned on staying an hour. We ended up sitting under a tree on a wall next to the cannons, when we thought we had seen everything we wanted, drinking in the sea views with the super yachts anchored up in the distance. There was a cafe there with plenty of seating but we didn’t purchase anything as we were heading to Gouvia afterwards for lunch.

We took some pictures of the English Hospital, the church, the cannons and the clock tower. Had it not have been so hot we may have stayed and looked around more thoroughly but glad we visited. This is our second visit to Corfu and although we passed the fortress several times, we never visited on the first time. As we were leaving a coach load of tourists came and we soon headed on our way. We had a toasted sandwich in the town and then headed to San Rocco Square for the No.7 bus to Gouvia.
