Nisyros Dodecanese island has charming very picturesque villages such as Mandraki, Emporio and Nikia, with photogenic churches and scenery. Having explored all of these areas and sunbathing at Pali.
Nisyros is known for its active volcano which you can visit and walk on. In addition, we also saw several churches and monasteries along the route. Prophet Elias church near Nikia is stunning, as is the church in Nikia.
Furthermore, we were the only people on the volcano when we visited. Travelling around some of the Dodecanese islands. Namely, Kos, Nisyros, Leros and Kalymnos and how easy it was to do. We stayed at the Porfyris hotel in Mandraki [ lovely swimming pool] which is traditional Greek in decor and charm.
I now prefer the less touristy islands
I will explore on my pages what it is like to fly to Kos and then island hop amongst Dodecanese islands. For this trip, I am excited to have visited these islands as they appear to be traditionally Greek. With the exception of Kos, the others seem less touristy.
After studying Google maps, I am keen to compare and share what each unique island had to offer and the reality once there. These island hopping adventures take several months of planning. I have spent researching this a year in advance, booking various hotels, flights and ferries to all co-ordinate.
South Aegean sea
Nisyros Dodecanese island is an active Volcanic island and could be described as an island ‘off the beaten track’. Both islands are not that far from Turkey. Located south of Kos and in the south Aegean sea.
We travelled by boat from Kardamaina to Nisyros because the ferry company we had booked, changed the dates and times.
I hope you enjoy reading about our adventures in the Dodecanese islands.
The Dodecanese islands also include Karpathos, Kasos, Lipsy, Patmos, Rhodes, Symi and Tilos. There are others in this group too. I last went to Rhodes over 10 years ago briefly and ended up on a beach in Faliraki.
Revisiting Kos after 10 years and finding the same restaurant again, was awesome.
