Kalamaki Beach Hotel Zakynthos 2013
Kalamaki beach hotel Zakynthos- If you have read my previous story of going to Zakynthos [ Zante] 2012, and the rain we encountered, you may be surprised to know that we decided to go back again the following year. This time a week earlier than last year, in Sept 2013. To explain, to see if it would be any better the second time around.
I had kept a close eye on the weather forecast and it was still looking good, sunny days ahead.
Specifically, we decided we would like to be nearer to Kalamkai beach as we liked this area and it was close to the airport. I am not a ‘plane spotter per say’ but I do like to watch the holiday planes coming in low. Hence the photos of the planes i have included in the gallery! I loved to see them flying over the pool area and past our balcony.
I booked through Travel Republic, and had read reviews on Trip Advisor, about the Kalamaki Beach hotel Zakynthos.
We decided to book this, and again, as usual I emailed the hotel to ask for a possible seaview room, on an upper floor. We had an email back stating as the hotel was full, they had reserved us a ground floor garden aspect room. I wasn’t overly looking forward to this. However upon arrival it was a lovely ground floor room, right next to the breakfast balcony, with a garden view and ‘distant’ sea view through the trees.
The pool was big, with plenty of sun loungers, out door shower and toilet/changing room, and it was a stone’s throw from the beach. The staff on reception were very friendly and approachable. We had hired a car whilst there.
The breakfast was buffet style and adequate for what we wanted. Boiled eggs, bread, meats and cheese, yoghurt and fruit. The aeroplanes flew right over the pool area and was entertaining to watch them. They didn’t disturb us in any way and we never heard any at night and it wasn’t busy every day. There is the Kalamaki beach taverna, which did lovely Greek salads, dips and pitta bread which we had for our lunch a couple, of times. The sun beds on the beach were plentiful, but later in the day it did become busy. I think we paid 7 euros for 2 sunbeds and a parasol. I love this hotel it has the beach, a very large swimming pool and kids pool, sun loungers of which there are plenty. Breakfast is plentiful. It is far enough to be away from the noise of Kalamaki strip yet only a ten minute walk for the action. The plane spotting is a bonus too. Staff at the Kalamaki Beach hotel Zakynthos are very friendly, the rooms are spotless and I love the location.
On Kalamaki Beach at the bottom of the Kalamaki beach hotel Zakynthos, there are turtle nests on the beach and the Conservation staff would give out leaflets warning where not to walk and where you could go, to protect the Loggerhead turtle nests.
We never saw a turtle on either of our trips to Zante but we did meet a gentleman on the beach who said very early that morning he had seen all the baby turtles running across the sand to the sea, I was so disappointed we didn’t see any. I believe if you go earlier in the year you are more likely to see them. Maybe in September in general they have all gone in to the big ocean. On our last morning we left the Kalamaki beach hotel at 06.30am went down to the beach to watch the sunrise and to see if we could spot any turtles but we didn’t see any.
I would recommend the Kalamaki beach hotel Zakynthos to anyone. I would definitely return there again, it was right by the beach, the pool was very large with plenty sunbeds, and ideally located to be away from the main strip and hustling night life, but easy to walk to- 10 minutes. The bar which is located on the front was very chilled out of an evening, we had a couple of Irish coffee’s there on our way back from Kalamaki strip, mellow music playing, very relaxing. There are plenty of books you can swap or borrow in reception. I think wifi only worked in the main reception area. I loved having breakfast alfresco on the breakfast terrace.
A group of seven family members went in 2016. We once again stayed at The Kalamaki Beach hotel, Zakynthos and had the same room. They managed to get all our rooms together on one floor so we were all close by. We went for a family holiday and to renew our wedding vows. We had glorious weather and such fun. The best night of our holiday was spent paying 10 euros each for Kalamaki Beach hotel Zakynthos Greek night. We had a lovely plentiful meal followed by Greek dancers who invited members of the audience up to dance. There was a singer also. It was one of the best nights I have had on any of the Greek islands, well worth the money. When in Greece, you have to get up to the Bouzouki music especially to Zorba the Greek, which we did, had such a laugh and learnt a few new dance moves. And…we finally spotted the turtles. We got up at 6.30am to go down to the beach where we could see a small crowd gathering around several baby hatchlings who thankfully all navigated their difficult journey through the sand and to the sea. Lets just hope they have a long and happy life, and not eaten by predators. It was quite moving and very emotional. You can see the pics on my turtle page and a video here of the baby turtles.
I would recommend the Kalamaki beach hotel Zakynthos to anyone and would not hesitate to return again.
